ECO:VATIVE Ideas - The Vampire Effect

Hi everyone!

This ECO:VATIVE Idea focuses on vampires. Though not quite the bloodsuckers from popular movies and television, your adapters and chargers are in fact electricity vampires, sucking dollars from your pocketbook even when not in use.

Let's just take a look at cell phone chargers in the US for a moment:

There are over 220 Million cell phone users in the United States. If every cell phone charger was unplugged while not in use, the savings would be as follows:

10watts x 20hr/day(when charger is unplugged) x 30 (days in September)= 6 kwh

That's only a savings of about 60 cents for each individual in September, however multiply that by EVERY cell phone user in the US, and:

6 kwh x 220,000,000 (American cell phone users) x $.10/kwh= $132 Million

That converts to nearly 920,000 metric tons of CO2 in ONE MONTH!!

By each user unplugging one cell phone charger when not in use, we would reduce emissions equivalent to keeping 2.5 Million cars off of the road each month!

So think about that the next time you see an idle charger or adapter. Together we can all make the built environment a better environment.

Keep Saving,

Chris
